宜昌古称夷陵，因“水至此而夷，山至此而陵”得名，后取“宜于昌盛”之意改称宜昌。宜昌历史悠久，七八千年前先民就在这块土地上繁衍生息。宜昌也是蜡梅原产地之一，每逢冬春，宜昌市夷陵区的野梅谷河谷灿黄、花密如星。这朵指尖大小的花卉，耐受住第四纪冰川的考验，经历数百万年地质变迁，至今仍保持着旺盛的生命力。
